Tuesday, October 14, 2008 2:33Health insurance is an insurance taken against loss by illness or any body injury. Insurance acts as a coverage for medicines, visits to various doctors, and cost of using the emergency room, hospital stays and other medical expenses. There are number of health insurance policies.
International student insurance plans are mainly for the international students who travel abroad for the purpose of studying. The international student health insurance plans are designed to provide coverage to the international students for their medical expenses resulting from sudden illness or injury during their stay abroad. International student insurance plans provide these facilities to the students for a period of four years or more.
A few insurance plans for international students provide maternity coverage for a period of three months to two years. All international universities require the students coming from abroad to have a health insurance plan. A number of these universities also provide the facility of international student health insurance policies. An international student can take these plans easily from their college campus. Many colleges require the students to take the insurance plans from them.
But most of the universities allow the student to take insurance plans from outside if a student shows proof of comparable coverage and has strong reasons for not taking the insurance policy offered by the university. The insurance plans provided by the universities are very comprehensive and extremely expensive for an international student’s requirement and budget.
Before taking any plan a student should read all the documents very carefully. This will help them to understand as well as compare their insurance policy. They should pay attention to the following points.
- Your policy should provide maternity, mental and sport coverage.
- It should not cost more in co-pay and co-insurance if you have to go to an emergency room.
Even if you are not taking your college’s health care plan, you should visit its health care center. Many services are free or are provided at reduced rates for the benefit of students. Many private students’ health insurance plans will give you a discount if you use the facilities of the campus health care system rather than using outside facilities.
Even after taking an insurance plan you should be ready to pay some expenses for health benefit from your pocket. Most of the foreign health care plans are very expensive. So it would be smart move on your part to plan your expenses from before. Your insurance can only protect you against traumatic expenses, but it will not provide you with any additional benefit if you are not ready to pay more for it.
So always plan your international budget from before. This will save much of your time and money and would also help you in enjoying your international education to the fullest.
